31 juillet - Retour sur repos à Helena et départ d'Helena

Bonjour à tous.
Quelques jours passés à Helena chez Dick m'ont permis une bonne récupération et aussi de m'imprégner de l'histoire du Montana: Helena a été fondée le 14 juillet 1864 suite à une découverte d'or par quatre Georgiens. Helena s'est tout d'abord appelée Last Chance Gulch et est devenue en 1875 la capitale du Montana.

Le matin du 30 juillet a été un départ pas comme les autres. Patrick va m'accompagner quinze jours à travers les Rockies et m'aider à trouver la porte de sortie du Montana vers l'Oregon.
On the morning of July 30 was a start like no other. Patrick will ride with me for two weeks through the Rockies and help me find my way out of Montana to Oregon. |

Patrick est bien arrivé avec un voyage un peu galère: 5h de retard au départ à Paris par un vol direct pour Seattle mais avec un changement d'équipage à Détroit non prévu. Son transfert à Great Falls raté, il a été obligé de passer la nuit à Seattle. Heureusement, une personne de Delta Air Line très gentille lui a démêlé la situation et lui a trouvé un vol pour Helena via Salt Lake City.
Patrick has arrived despite adventures along the way: 5-hour delay leaving Paris by a direct flight to Seattle, but with an unplanned crew change in Detroit. His transfer to Great Falls missed, he was forced to spend the night in Seattle. Fortunately, someone very nice Delta Air Line unraveled his situation and he found a flight to Salt Lake City via Helena. |

27 juillet - Étape à Philipsburg, Lincoln à Helena.

Bonjour à tous.
Après les quelques jours passés à Flint campground, j'ai été accueilli à Philipsburg (Montana) chez Don et Vicky. Don est un bike coach, juge à l'UCI (Union Cycliste Internationale), passionné de vélo. J'ai pu voir l'arrivée du tour de France et l'étape de l'Alpe d'Huez en différé. Ces images m'ont réconnecté à mon pays et je me suis aperçu que les vallées des Alpes sont étroites comparé à celles des Rocheuses. J'ai quitté ce coin du Montana à regret où j'ai trouvé une certaine douceur de vie que j'aurai encore plus appréciée en restant un peu plus longtemps. Un grand merci pour l'hospitalité de Don et Vicky et le temps passé par Don pour contacter différentes familles afin de me trouver un toit ou un morceau de pelouse à travers le Montana.

After a few days in Flint campground, I was greeted in Philipsburg (Montana) at Don and Vicky. Don is a bike coach, judge the UCI (International Cycling Union), bike enthusiast. I could see the arrival of the Tour de France and the stage to Alpe d'Huez delayed. These images have reconnected to my country and I appercu the Alpine valleys are narrow compared to those the Rockies. I left this part of Montana or regret I found a certain sweetness of life that I have appreciated more by staying a little longer. A big thank you for the hospitality of Don and Vicky and the time spent by Don to contact different families to find me a roof or a piece of lawn across Montana.

Je reste quelques jours à Helena, capitale du Montana et grâce à Don et son réseau de connaissance, je suis gentiment hébergé chez une famille. Ces quelques jours vont être consacrés à la maintenance du vélo, à la visite de musées, à ajuster la dernière partie du voyage vers le Pacifique, un peu de repos et peu de vélo bien sûr.

I stay a few days in Helena, Montana's capital and with Don and his network of knowledge, I am kindly hosted by a family. These few days will be devoted to the maintenance of the bike, to visit museums, to adjust the last part of the journey to the Pacific, a little rest and some cycling course.

La petite histoire du MacDonald pass.
Guyot Constant a construit une route à péage qui traverse la Continental Divide près d'ici en 1867. Parce qu'il a fourni le moyen de relier le plus directement Deer Lodge et Helena en passant par les montagnes, c'était une route populaire pour les voyageurs. L'épouse de Guyot a tenu un deux-pièces "hôtel-restaurant" dans une cabane en rondins sur Dog Creek près de l'actuel Elliston. Mme Guyot était célèbre pour son hospitalité et les repas copieux qu'elle a servi aux voyageurs affamés. En peu de temps, sa renommée a été faite et cette route a été surnommée "The Franchwoman's Road". En 1868, elle a été retrouvée assassinée dans sa cabane. Son meurtrier n'a jamais été retrouvé, mais le soupçon s'est porté sur son mari qui avait fuit le territoire peu de temps après sa mort. Selon le folklore local, son fantôme hante toujours la cabane. Elijah M. "Lige" Dunphy a repris la route à péage en 1870 et a embauché Alexender Red MacDonald pour le gérer. En raison de sa grande connaissance de la route, celle ci est devenue connue sous le nom MacDonald Pass.
En septembre 1911, Cromwell Dixon, le "Bird Boy", a obtenu un prix de 10.000 dollars quand il est devenu le premier aviateur en Amérique à avoir survolé la Continental Divide non loin de cet endroit. Il est mort deux jours plus tard quand son biplan s'est écrasé à l'Inland Empire Fair à Spokane.
The story of the MacDonald Pass.
Constant Guyot built a toll road across the Continental Divide near here in 1867. Because it provided the most direct way over the mountains between Deer Lodge and Helena, it was a popular route for travelers. Guyot's wife ran a two-room *hotel* and restaurant in a log cabin on Dog Creek near present Elliston. Madame Guyot was famous for her hospitality and the hearty meals she served to hungry travelers. Within a short time, the operation was known as The Frenchwoman's. In 1868, she was found murdered in the cabin. Her killer was never caught, but evidence pointed to her husband, who had fled the territory shortly after her death. According to local folklore, her ghost haunted the cabin for many years afterwards. Elijah M. "Lige" Dunphy took over the toll road in 1870 and hired Alexender "Red" MacDonald to manage it. Because of his long association with the road, it became known as MacDonald Pass.
In september 1911, Cromwell Dixon, the "Bird Boy", earned a $10,000 prize when he became the first aviator in America to fly over the Continental Divide not too far from this spot. He died two days later when his biplane crashed at the Inland Empire Fair in Spokane.

Tout d'abord, un rapide retour sur le Yellowstone:
Lorsque j'ai quitté le Missouri pour éviter le Nord Dakota, j'ai eu le sentiment de perdre le fil de l'histoire de Lewis & Clark et de la trame de mon voyage. Mais la partie du Montana entre Belle Fourche (Sud Dakota) et Billings (Montana) valait la peine d'être traversée.
First, a quick return to the Yellowstone Park.
When I left Missouri to avoid North Dakota, I had the feeling I was losing the thread of the story of Lewis & Clark and the direction of my trip. But the part of Montana between Belle Fourche, South Dakota, and Billings, Montana, is well worth crossing. |

Mon retour sur la rivière Yellowstone m'a fait rerentrer dans mon voyage car une partie de l'expédition en 1806 sous la conduite de Clark avait exploré cette région sur leur retour.
My return to the Yellowstone River made me come back to my journey following the expedition because in 1806, part of the expedition led by Clark explored this region on their return east. |

Le parc du Yellowstone est un endroit magnifique et très visité, ce qui implique une densité de véhicules incroyable. Il faut rester vigilant pour circuler à vélo. L'avantage du cylocamping dans le parc est qu'il n'est pas besoin de réserver un emplacement. il y a toujours de la place pour les hikers et bikers au campground. Pour la photo d'animaux, mieux vaut le téléobjectif avec pied. Tout ça pour vous dire que je n'ai pas essayé d'approcher les deux grizzli dont une mère avec deux oursons avec mon téléphone.
Yellowstone Park is a beautiful and heavily visited place, which means an incredible density of motor vehicle traffic. You have to stay on your toes, so to speak, to cycle on the park roads. The advantage of cylocamping in the park is that there is no need to reserve a space. There is always room for hikers and bikers to camp. For pictures of animals, it’s better to use the telephoto lens and the tripod. All this to say that I didn’t dare approach the two grizzly bears, including a mother with two cubs, with my phone.

Et pour terminer, toujours le hasard, une belle rencontre à Butte (Montana) au camping. Un petit brin de causette avec mes voisins du Sud Dakota. Mon voyage et l'hospitalité de la réserve Yankton Sioux dans le Sud Dakota ou l'on m'avait hébergé à l'hôtel de Fort Randall. Dana me dit bien connaître cette réserve. Il est conseillé d'orientation au lycée à Wagner (Sud Dakota). Il connait très bien cette famille Yankton Sioux, particulièrement cette personne qui m'avait hébergé car il a eu comme élève. Dana au travers de son expérience et son vécu dans ces réserves a un point de vue très intéressant à écouter.
And finally, as luck would have it, as usual, in Butte, Montana at the campsite. A little chat with neighbors from South Dakota about my trip and the hospitality of the Yankton Sioux reservation in South Dakota where I was welcomed at the Fort Randall hotel. Dana told me much about this subject. He’s a counselor at the Wagner, South Dakota, high school. He knows the Yankton Sioux very well, including the person who housed me, someone he knew as a student. Through his experience in these reserves, Dana has a very interesting perspective. |
